Stunning French Eucharist Medallion 1892
Religious medallions are an integral part of the French jewelry wardrobe. Growing exceedingly popular during the second half of the 19th century, they represented a marker or gaming chip in the life long journey to an eternity of happiness in the next world. Acquired at baptisms, communions, marriages, and above all, pilgrimages (read: medallion collection missions,) medallions were not only acquired by those that completed the religious objective, but minted for loved ones as offerings to the saint most honored by the performance of these journeys and rituals.
One of the best ones I brought back on my recent jewel pilgrimage to Paris, this 18ct French medallion of holy Eucharist; in three tonalities of metal- 18ct warm pink, soft yellow, and platinum for the communion wafer that slips invisibly into the wine goblet. Signed on the reverse ‘M B’ 5 Juin, 1892, This will be an iconic addition to any collection.
